Strip And Wax Wood Floors

Stripping and waxing wood floors is a great way to restore their original shine and luster. But, in reality, this is a time-consuming and labor-intensive task. With the right tools and materials, you can strip and wax your wood floors like a pro. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Wood floor cleaner
  • Floor stripper
  • Tack cloth
  • Floor wax
  • Applicator pad
  • Buffer
  • Soft cloths

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Preparation:

Before you start stripping and waxing your wood floors, clean them thoroughly with a wood floor cleaner. This will remove any dirt, dust, or debris that could interfere with the stripping and waxing process. Allow the floor to dry completely before proceeding.

2. Stripping:

Apply the floor stripper to a small area of the floor, following the manufacturer's instructions. Use an applicator pad to work the stripper into the finish. Allow the stripper to sit for the recommended amount of time, then use a damp cloth to wipe away the stripper and loosened finish. Rinse the area with clean water and dry thoroughly.

3. Neutralizing:

After stripping the floor, it's important to neutralize the stripper to prevent any damage to the wood. Mix a solution of 1 cup of white vinegar to 1 gallon of water. Apply the solution to the floor and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Rinse the floor with clean water and dry thoroughly.

4. Waxing:

Apply a thin, even coat of floor wax to the floor using an applicator pad. Allow the wax to dry for the recommended amount of time, then buff the floor with a buffer to bring out the shine. Use soft cloths to wipe away any excess wax.

5. Maintenance:

To keep your newly waxed wood floors looking their best, dust and mop them regularly. You can also apply a fresh coat of wax every 6-12 months, depending on the traffic and wear on the floor.

Tips:

  • Test the stripper in an inconspicuous area before using it on the entire floor.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection when using floor stripper.
  • Ventilate the area well when stripping and waxing your wood floors.
  • Allow the floor to dry completely after each step.
  • If you're not comfortable stripping and waxing your wood floors yourself, hire a professional flooring contractor.
