Repair Hole In Wood Floor

Wood flooring is a beautiful and durable addition to any home, but it is not immune to damage. Over time, holes can develop in wood floors due to wear and tear, pet damage, or accidents. If you find yourself with a hole in your wood floor, do not despair. With the right tools and materials, you can repair it yourself in a few simple steps. Use wood filler if the hole is small (less than 1/4 inch in diameter) and shallow (less than 1/4 inch deep). Larger or deeper holes may require a wood plug or a patch.

To repair a small hole with wood filler, start by cleaning the area around the hole with a damp cloth. Allow the area to dry completely. Next, fill the hole with wood filler using a putty knife or your finger. Be sure to press the wood filler firmly into the hole. Once the hole is filled, smooth the surface with the putty knife. Allow the wood filler to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once the wood filler is dry, sand the area smooth with fine-grit sandpaper.

To repair a larger hole with a wood plug, start by cutting a plug that is slightly larger than the hole. The plug can be made from a scrap piece of wood that matches the species and color of your flooring. Once the plug is cut, apply wood glue to the bottom of the plug and insert it into the hole. Tap the plug into place with a hammer and nail set. Countersink the nail slightly below the surface of the wood floor. Once the plug is in place, sand the area smooth with fine-grit sandpaper.

To repair a large or deep hole with a patch, start by cutting a patch that is slightly larger than the hole. Cut the patch from a scrap piece of wood that matches the species and color of your flooring. Next, apply wood glue to the edges of the patch and insert it into the hole. Clamp the patch in place and allow the glue to dry completely. Once the glue is dry, remove the clamps and sand the area smooth with fine-grit sandpaper.

Once the hole is repaired, you can finish the repair by staining and sealing the area to match the rest of the floor. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the stain and sealer that you are using.
