How To Lay Wood Flooring On Concrete
When used correctly, concrete can make a great subfloor. Here is how you can lay wood floors on concrete.
Tools and Materials
- Moisture meter
- Concrete patch
- Floor leveler
- Vacuum cleaner
- Circular saw
- Chalk line
- Carpenter's square
- Notched trowel
- Tile adhesive (Thin-set mortar)
- Wood flooring
Step 1: Testing and preparing the concrete
- Using a moisture meter, assess the moisture content of the concrete slab. It should be less than 12%. If it's higher, you'll need to wait until the concrete has dried sufficiently or install a vapor barrier.
- Examine the concrete surface for any cracks, holes, or uneven areas. Fill any cracks or holes with concrete patch and level any uneven areas with a floor leveler.
- Vacuum the concrete surface thoroughly to remove any dust or debris.
Step 2: Installing the underlayment
- An underlayment is crucial because it acts as a moisture barrier, reduces noise, and provides a smooth surface for the wood flooring.
- Roll out the underlayment over the concrete, making sure to overlap the seams by at least 6 inches.
- Tape the seams together using duct tape or underlayment tape.
Step 3: Laying the wood flooring
- Start by laying the first row of planks along one of the longest walls in the room.
- Use spacers to maintain a consistent gap between the planks and the wall all around the perimeter of the room.
- Apply a thin layer of tile adhesive to the back of the first plank using a notched trowel.
- Place the plank in position and tap it into place using a rubber mallet.
- Continue laying the planks in rows, staggering the joints for added strength.
- Use a circular saw to cut the planks to length as needed.
- Once the flooring is complete, allow the adhesive to dry for at least 24 hours before walking on it.
