Gluing Down Engineered Wood Flooring

Engineered wood flooring is a popular choice for homeowners because it is durable, easy to care for, and can be installed in a variety of ways. One option for installing engineered wood flooring is to glue it down. This method is more time-consuming than other methods, but it results in a more durable and secure installation.

To glue down engineered wood flooring, you will need the following materials:

  • Engineered wood flooring
  • Wood glue
  • Notched trowel
  • Spreader
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Utility knife
  • Hammer
  • Tapping block

Once you have gathered your materials, you can begin the installation process.

  1. Prepare the subfloor. The subfloor must be clean, dry, and level. If the subfloor is not level, you will need to level it using a self-leveling compound.
  2. Lay out the flooring. Start by laying out the flooring in the center of the room. Work your way out from the center, making sure to leave a 1/4-inch gap around the perimeter of the room.
  3. Apply the wood glue. Use a notched trowel to apply a thin layer of wood glue to the subfloor. Spread the glue evenly, being careful not to apply too much.
  4. Install the flooring. Place the first plank of flooring on the subfloor and press it down firmly. Continue installing the flooring, working your way out from the center of the room. Use a tapping block and hammer to tap the planks into place.
  5. Trim the flooring. Once the flooring is installed, you will need to trim the edges around the perimeter of the room. Use a utility knife to score the flooring and then snap it off.
  6. Sand and finish the flooring. Once the flooring is trimmed, you will need to sand it and finish it. Sand the flooring with a fine-grit sandpaper, and then apply a polyurethane finish.

Gluing down engineered wood flooring is a more time-consuming method than other methods, but it results in a more durable and secure installation. By following these steps, you can successfully glue down your engineered wood flooring and enjoy it for years to come.
