Epoxy flooring has become a popular choice for both residential and commercial properties due to its durability, ease of maintenance, and attractive aesthetic. However, installing epoxy flooring over a wood subfloor requires careful consideration and proper preparation to ensure a successful and long-lasting installation.

Compatibility of Epoxy with Wood

Epoxy resin is generally compatible with wood subfloors; however, the condition of the wood is crucial. Epoxy requires a stable and solid surface to adhere to, so any damaged, rotted, or uneven areas must be repaired or replaced before installation.

Preparing the Wood Subfloor

Once the wood subfloor is in good condition, it needs to be properly prepared to enhance epoxy adhesion. Begin by thoroughly cleaning the surface to remove any dirt, dust, or debris. Sanding the surface lightly will create a slightly rough texture for better epoxy grip. Any cracks or gaps in the wood should be filled with a suitable wood filler and allowed to dry completely.

Vapor Barrier

Since wood is a porous material, it is prone to moisture absorption. To prevent moisture from reaching the epoxy coating and causing damage, a vapor barrier should be installed between the wood subfloor and the epoxy. A plastic sheeting with a thickness of at least 6 mil is typically used as a vapor barrier.

Priming the Subfloor

Pour the epoxy mixture onto the prepared subfloor and spread it evenly using a notched trowel. Curing Time and Maintenance

Epoxy flooring typically takes 24 to 72 hours to cure completely. During this time, it is essential to maintain a controlled environment with proper temperature and humidity as per the manufacturer's recommendations. Avoid any foot traffic or heavy objects on the epoxy surface until it is fully cured. Once cured, epoxy flooring requires minimal maintenance. Regular sweeping or mopping with a neutral cleaner is sufficient to maintain its appearance.
