How to Wax a Wood Floor

Waxing a wood floor is a great way to protect it from wear and tear and give it a beautiful shine. There are two types of wax that can be used on wood floors: paste wax and liquid wax. Paste wax is more durable and longer-lasting, but it can be more difficult to apply. Liquid wax is easier to apply, but it doesn't last as long. It’s important to choose the right type of wax for the floor you are waxing and the desired finish. For example, if you have a heavily trafficked floor, you may want to use a paste wax. If you have a delicate floor, you may want to use a liquid wax. You can normally find instructions on the wax product or online about what type of floors the wax is recommended for.

Once you have chosen a wax, you will need to gather the following supplies:

  • Wax
  • Applicator (sponge, cloth, or waxing machine)
  • Buffer (optional)
  • Soft cloths
  • Mineral spirits (optional)

Before you begin waxing the floor, it is important to clean it thoroughly. This will remove any dirt or debris that could prevent the wax from adhering to the floor. You can clean the floor with a vacuum cleaner or a mop and a cleaning solution.

Once the floor is clean, you can begin applying the wax. If you are using paste wax, you will need to apply it with a sponge or cloth. If you are using liquid wax, you can apply it with a sponge, cloth, or waxing machine. Apply the wax in a thin, even coat, working in small sections. Allow the wax to dry for the amount of time specified on the product label.

Once the wax has dried, you can buff it to a shine. You can buff the wax with a buffer or a soft cloth. If you are using a buffer, be sure to use a soft bonnet. Buff the wax until it has a high shine.

After you have buffed the wax, you can remove any excess wax with a soft cloth. You can also use mineral spirits to remove any stubborn wax residue. Allow the floor to dry completely before walking on it.

Waxing a wood floor is a relatively easy task that can be completed in a few hours. By following these steps, you can give your wood floor a beautiful shine and protect it from wear and tear.
