How To Resurface Wood Floors

Resurfacing wood floors is a great way to restore their original beauty and extend their lifespan. The process involves removing the old finish and refinishing the wood, resulting in a smooth, new-looking surface. While resurfacing can be a challenging task, it is possible to achieve professional-looking results with the right tools and techniques.

Before starting, ensure you have all the necessary tools and materials, including a floor sander, edger sander, drum sander, sanding discs, a vacuum cleaner, a tack cloth, wood filler, a stain, polyurethane, a brush or roller, and a paint thinner or mineral spirits.

The first step is to prepare the floor by removing any furniture or obstacles. Then, thoroughly vacuum and sweep the floor to remove any dirt or debris. Use a tack cloth to remove any remaining dust or particles.

Next, rent a floor sander and select the appropriate sanding discs. Start with a coarse-grit disc to remove the old finish and gradually move to finer-grit discs to smooth the surface. Use the edger sander to sand along the edges of the floor and in corners where the drum sander cannot reach.

Once the old finish is removed, inspect the floor for any imperfections, such as dents or scratches. Fill these imperfections with wood filler, allow it to dry, and sand it flush with the surrounding surface.

Now it's time to apply the stain. Stir the stain thoroughly and apply it evenly to the floor using a brush or roller. Allow the stain to penetrate for the recommended time, then wipe off any excess with a clean cloth.

Finally, apply multiple coats of polyurethane to protect the stain and give the floor a durable finish. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next. After applying the final coat, allow the floor to cure for at least 24 hours before walking on it.
